Who we are

Tree surgeons who think beyond the chainsaw

Moor Forestry is the trading name of DARTMOOR TREE SURGEONS LTD, a small team of tree surgeons and woodland contractors working across Dartmoor and the surrounding Devon countryside. Our background is in the practical end of forestry: felling, climbing, pruning and extraction on sites that range from a few garden oaks to compartments of several hectares. That work taught us how woodlands actually respond to being cut, and it is why regeneration and thinning now sit at the centre of what we do.

Thinning is a craft of timing and restraint. Take out too little and the crop stays crowded and tall-drawn; take out too much and windblow makes the decision for you. We walk the site, look at the stocking, the species mix and the shelter, and set out a marked fell that leaves the best stems room to grow. On Dartmoor's thin, wet soils, that judgement matters more than it does on kinder ground.

Regeneration is the other half of the job. Where a stand has failed, or where you want a native mix coming on beneath a thinning crop, we plan the restocking around what the site will genuinely support. That may mean natural regeneration from a seed source already present, which costs little and keeps local provenance. Where planting is the better answer, we advise on species, fencing and the years of aftercare that follow, because a woodland is not made in a single season.

We are a modest operation, and we like it that way. The person who walks your site is the person who marks the trees and the person who returns a year later to check how the crop has come on. You deal directly with the contractors, not through a chain of subcontractors. If you need a plan written up for an application or a management scheme, we can set that out clearly, but our first instinct is always to look at the wood itself.

DARTMOOR TREE SURGEONS LTD is registered in England and Wales, fully insured, and works to the standards you would expect on any commercial forestry site. We are as comfortable on a National Park holding as on a farm shelterbelt or a smallholding copse. Whatever the scale, the approach is the same: walk it, understand it, then cut with a purpose.
